The Southwest Michigan Skating Club (SWMSC) is an US Figure Skating-affiliated organization that was established in 1989.  It is a non-profit, volunteer organization that offers various opportunities for people of all ages, abilities and interests, from the recreational skaters, to those interested in gaining solid skating skills to help introduce them to, or advance them in, the sport of hockey, to those who wish to pursue their goals and dreams in the sport of figure skating.  SWMSC provides excellent programs with experienced, dedicated coaches and a friendly environment in which to skate – for whatever your goals may be!

Opportunities offered by the Southwest Michigan Skating Club include:

 ·        Skate With Us  - This is SWMSC’s group lesson, learn-to-skate program.  Using US Figure Skating approved curriculum, skaters (who are placed in small groups by age and ability) learn the fundamentals of the sport.  Skaters learn proper techniques, improve balance and coordination and promote physical fitness all while having fun!  Each level builds upon the last, so the more levels passed, the better the skater!

          Skate With Us Levels:

Snowplow Sam 1-3 – Designed specifically for preschool children, these levels help develop the strength necessary to maneuver on the ice, utilizing creative games and toys.

Basic 1-8  (6 years & up) – skaters learn forward and backward skating, stops, edges, crossovers, turns and Mohawks

Hockey 1-4  (6 years & up) – endorsed by USA Hockey as their learn to skate curriculum   From here, skaters may move directly to a learn to play program.

Adult 1-4 – designed for the beginning adult skater

 ·        Introductory Membership – SWMSC’s Introductory Membership is a two-month, non-renewable membership designed for the skater who has reached a level of Basic 1* or higher and desires one-on-one instruction with a club coach (rather than lessons in a group setting) and is considering Full Club Membership.  This program allows skaters most of the benefits of Full Club Membership for the same relative cost as a session of group lessons.  Best of all, twenty dollars of the Introductory Membership fee may be applied toward the cost of Full Club Membership!  (Click here for more details)

·        Full Club Membership – A skater may become a Full Club Member upon completion of the Introductory Membership or has a Basic 1* level or higher and already has a club-endorsed coach in mind with whom he or she would like to work.  This level of membership provides opportunities for figure skaters to advance their skills in any or all of the figure skating disciplines (moves in the field, free style, ice dancing, pairs, synchronized skating).  In addition, club members may participate in US Figure Skating sponsored test sessions, exhibitions and individual and team competitions.  Full Club Members are also invited to take part in all club functions (annual ice show, awards banquet, Kalamazoo holiday parade, etc.) and have club voting privileges.   As Full Club Members, skaters will also receive “Skating” magazine and will be eligible to skate at any US Figure Skating Club, nationwide.  Access to the “members only” area of the US Figure Skating website is also granted.  (Click here for more information)

·        Synchronized Skating – Also known as team skating, synchronized skating combines individual and team skills in order to perform basic synchronized elements in routines set to music.  This is a fun way to improve skills and meet new friends!  There are both youth and adult teams available to those skaters enrolled in Skate With Us or who are members of SWMSC.

*Skaters at a Basic Skills level 3 or below may only be on the ice while under direct supervision of a coach and will have no unsupervised practice time.
